5.3.1. Approachable Contemporary Piano Repertoire! A Study of Selected Piano Works by Two Living Composers: David Gordon Duke and Stefan Young

This lecture recital is to introduce piano compositions by two living composers: David Gordon Duke and Stefan Young. The repertoire chosen includes: Preludes (1980s), Postcards (1980s), and Sonatina (1977) by David Gordon Duke; and From the Dark Woods (1991), Meditation (2002), and La Guitarra (1993) by Stefan Young. Both composers were born in the mid-1900s. Their music represents styles ranging from classical to contemporary. These pieces provide effective early engagement with contemporary idioms and are viable substitutes for standard works featuring similar twentieth-century compositional techniques and ideas. It is hoped that this presentation will promote pianists’ appreciation of contemporary music, thus fostering the support and development of new music.
Contemporary compositional techniques will be broken down into categories: rhythm and meter, harmony and tonality, unusual scales, and other features. Examples to be shown include: shifting accent, changing meter, unmeasured score, polyrhythm, secundal harmony, quartal harmony, polytonality, atonality, parallelism, ostinato, octatonic scales, whole tone scales, pentatonic scales, blues progression, and quotation.
The various levels of piano literature by Duke and Young can be generally divided into three main categories: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. Each of these categories may be further subdivided into early, middle, and late levels. The compositions presented in this workshop range from early elementary to early advanced levels. A handout of the level of these pieces will be provided for quick reference. The performance of these pieces is approximately 25-35 minutes.

The short film has documented the transformational journey to the far-off India of the Chinese guitar player Lee, who went there to learn sitar. The story of finding and learning sitar is a documentary that gives us a brief insight into India, shares the shots of Indian life, lets us enjoy sitar music and see the traditions and customs of Indian society, glimpses into poverty and the history of India, full of hardships but also full of vitality. At the end of the short film we can see the traditional Indian night worship at the Ganges; through the director’s eyes, we can see this stunning ceremony. This film reflects on the spirituality, humanity, our world and the world beyond.
Adinda Assyfa Kamalia (Dir.), Indonesia
This film describes life in suburb Jakarta where almost all of residents really love dangdut music. They are a humble community that have favorite songs, have special dancing, and also routine agenda! 'Dangdut is My Music' is representative of Indonesia people who really love soccer and take dangdut music seriously. This film explores the challenges of identity in this country.
Jeremy Mowery (Dir.), USA
There is an underground music scene present in the backyards of Los Angeles. It has been put on by the youth, for the youth, ever since the original punk rock movement of the late 1970's. It is made up of young like-minded people, coming from either broken homes and/or low-income communities. This documentary explores the social issues and the talent coming out of the scene. The youth organizes, promotes and plays the shows in backyards, keeping alive this thriving DIY scene as an outlet to not only deal with their issues, but make friends and simply blow off some steam.
