Please help to keep Intersections alive…

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

We on the MusCan board believe that Intersections is an important part of Canada’s musical profile here at home and in the world at large. For the past 35 years, the journal has been publishing insightful articles on music by leading Canadian and international scholars. The journal is rigorously peer-reviewed to the highest academic standards. It is open to a wide variety of opinions and ideas about the world of music, eschewing narrowly focussed theoretical or disciplinary frameworks in favour of a catholic range of subject matter and approaches.

This distinctive Canadian voice in musical academia is now under threat of being silenced. A grant from the Aid to Scholarly Journals Program of SSHRC supplied significant funding which supported the publication of the past three volumes of Intersections. This year the SSHRC grant came up for renewal, and unfortunately our application was not successful. This has dealt a serious blow to the financial viability of Intersections.

The Board of Directors of MusCan is proposing a two-pronged strategy to address this shortfall in funding. The first step is to reduce production costs of Intersections, while still maintaining the editorial integrity and professional standards of the journal. The second step is to raise funds from alternative sources to make up the financial shortfall. We aim to raise enough money to keep Intersections in business for the immediate future, with a view to resubmitting an application to SSHRC.

We are now turning to you, the MusCan membership, to ask for your support in helping to keep Intersections alive. We aim to raise $20,000 to replace the funds we will not be receiving from SSHRC this year. All funds donated by the MusCan membership (up to $10,000) will be matched by the MusCan board, as a show of our support for this fund raising effort. If each member of MusCan would contribute $50, our target would be met. We are confident that, by keeping Intersections alive and getting the publication schedule back on track, we will be able to make a successful application to SSHRC in the future. We hope that we can count on your help to keep Intersections alive.

All those who donate $25 or more will be provided with a tax receipt, and acknowledged in forthcoming issues of Intersections. Please consider adding a donation for Intersections when you renew your MusCan membership, and thank you in advance for your help and support.

Yours sincerely,
The MusCan Board
