Becoming Eleanor Stubley:
Beyond the Given

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

As a versatile conductor and an accomplished scholar, I am constantly reaching beyond the given as a I strive to renew and revitalize music as a performing art. The striving has developed a unique ability not only to bridge the gap between theory and practice, but, in many ways, to erase that gap altogether through an unswerving focus on the transformative relationship between body and music.

Eleanor Stubley (http://sites.music.mcgill.ca/es/bio/)

Eleanor Stubley combined her musical and educational selves in ways that were at once profoundly creative and wildly philosophical. Moving beyond disciplinary boundaries, she mobilized her hands to engage both music and language as bodily experience. Her desire to explore, learn, know and feel more, beyond the given, animates this call for contributions to an interdisciplinary research symposium and performance installation in response to and in honour of the life and work of scholar, conductor, and in all ways, music educator, Eleanor Stubley.

We envision several formats for contributions. Proposals for each format should include:

  • Scholarly papers: 200 word abstract
  • Panel conversations: proposed contributors, 100 word description of panel conversation theme
  • Narratives, written and/or oral (storytelling): 100 word description
  • Performance art, such as movement, drama, spoken word poetry: 100 word description
  • Multi-media works and/or music performances: 100 word description

Presenters, musicians, artists, and performers attending the interdisciplinary research symposium and performance installation will be invited to participate in a multi-modal festschrift in honour of Eleanor Stubley that we anticipate will be made publicly available in 2019.
