Associate or Assistant Professor in Music Theory

The University of British Columbia School of Music invites applications for a full-time Associate or Assistant Professor in Music Theory, beginning July 1, 2020. We seek a versatile scholar who has a strong record of research productivity in music theory and whose specializations include one or more areas that will help diversify the activities of the Theory Division. This may include engagement with cross-disciplinary collaboration, inter-cultural issues, or marginalized groups. Applicants should have demonstrated aptitude for innovative teaching, graduate supervision, and collaborative curriculum development, and demonstrated engagement with issues of diversity or inclusion through research, mentoring, teaching, or community-based initiatives. A Ph.D. in Music Theory is required. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Theory Division is an integral part of a dynamic School of Music that offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs in music, including M.A. and Ph.D. programs in music theory, musicology, and ethnomusicology, and is situated in a beautiful and culturally diverse metropolis. Our theory faculty is known for contributions to theories of rhythm and meter, world music analysis, music cognition, corpus studies, and the theories and analysis of contemporary art music.

  • a concise record of undergraduate and graduate teaching experience, including evidence of effectiveness;
  • a statement of teaching philosophy, and short descriptions (150-250 words each) outlining an upper-level undergraduate course and a graduate course they could offer to enrich our programs; and
  • a one-page statement about their experience working with a diverse student body and the contributions they would make to advancing a culture of equity and inclusion.
