Position in Opera Coaching

The Schulich School of Music of McGill University is Canada’s leading university-based program for the training of professional performers and composers, and for humanities-based and scientific research in music and sound.

Applications are invited for a non-tenure-track, full-time appointment in Opera Coaching at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Performance, for an initial term of three years beginning September 1, 2015.

Opera McGill is one of the flagship ensembles of the Schulich School of Music. We seek to appoint an exceptionally qualified individual who possesses many of the following qualities: excellent pianistic skills and outstanding sight-reading abilities; expert knowledge of lyric diction (Italian, French, German, and English), vast experience as rehearsal pianist and/or conductor/assistant conductor at major opera houses; extensive knowledge of the operatic repertoire; experience as freelance coach/conductor. Administrative and leadership experience will be an asset, as will strong inter-personal skills and the ability to work within a high-achieving team of passionately dedicated individuals. The successful candidate should have either a doctoral degree or the equivalent professional experience.

Duties may include: coaching and preparing students for roles in all Opera McGill performances; coaching, preparing and playing opera scenes programs; supervising and recruiting student rehearsal pianists for Opera McGill productions; participating in the recruitment of graduate collaborative pianists specializing in the opera repertoire; coaching selected voice students; collaborating with the Director of Opera McGill in choosing repertoire for productions and casting students in roles; teaching Diction classes and/or seminars related to the area of expertise; collaborating with Performance Librarian with regards to scores, editions, and orchestral parts; occasionally conducting Opera McGill productions, if appropriate to experience.
