Memorial University School of Music seeks to fill the following position effective September 1, 2016: A tenure-track appointment in Instrumental Conducting at the rank of Assistant Professor, subject to budgetary approval. Duties will include conducting the wind ensemble, as well as undergraduate and graduate instruction in instrumental conducting, instrumental ensemble repertoire, and score study and analysis. Additional teaching responsibilities in keeping with the qualifications of the successful candidate may also be required by the School. The successful candidate will also be expected to play a leadership role in outreach and student recruitment.
Memorial University is home to Atlantic Canada’s largest and most comprehensive school of music. Offering B.Mus. programs in performance, music education (including a conjoint B.Mus/B.Mus.Ed.), musicologies, and composition to 135 undergraduate students, the School also offers M.Mus. programs in conducting, performance, and performance/pedagogy, as well as M.A. and Ph.D programs in ethnomusicology. The School’s 24 full-time faculty enjoy national and international reputations in their fields and are active partners in the community’s vibrant cultural life.

Qualifications for the position include a doctorate in a relevant area (completed or ABD), demonstrated excellence as a conductor, and a record of successful teaching. Salary for this position is dependent on qualifications and experience in accordance with the terms of the Collective Agreement.
A completed earned doctorate is required for appointment to a tenure-track position. If a successful candidate has not completed an earned doctorate, he/she may be appointed to a regular term, non-renewable three-year appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. If the candidate completes all the requirements for the doctorate during the first 24 months of the term appointment, he/she shall begin a tenure-track appointment following completion of the requirements of the degree.
