Dean, Schulich School of Music
McGill University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Schulich School of Music.
Founded in 1821 and located in the multi-cultural city of Montréal, McGill University is one of Canada’s leading research-intensive universities. Its 34,000 students come from about 150 countries, making the student body the most internationally diverse of any medical-doctoral Canadian university. With a reputation for the highest standards of academic distinction and community contribution, McGill offers some 300 programs of study through 11 Faculties and 10 Schools, which have over 1,600 tenured and tenure-stream faculty members.
The Schulich School of Music is internationally competitive, and distinguished through its strength in both performance and research. The Departments of Music Research and Music Performance offer a comprehensive range of programs, from the licentiate and bachelor of music to the doctorate. There are about 850 students, roughly one-third of them in graduate programs. The opening of the New Music Building in 2005 has added state-of-the-art facilities, including the Marvin Duchow Music Library, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology, the Wirth Opera Studio and the Multi-Media Room with its professional recording studio. Performance is very strong in all fields of classical music (early music through to contemporary) and in jazz, while research is strong in musicology, music theory, composition and education, as well as in music technology and sound recording.
The new Dean will have an outstanding record of musical and scholarly research achievements, combined with a strong record of teaching and exemplary administration; demonstrated effectiveness as a leader; familiarity with both performance and research; and experience in obtaining resources for music research and education, including experience in fundraising from philanthropic sources. Facility in the French language is an asset.
Review of candidates will begin in November, and will continue until the position is filled. McGill University is committed to equity in employment and diversity. It welcomes applications from indigenous peoples, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, women, and persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others who may contribute to further diversification. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
