Dear members,
I wanted to send a few follow-up announcements after our previous message regarding the cancellation of this year’s annual conference.  Thanks very much for your patience, consideration, and kind words so far in regards to the difficult situation this year – it has been very appreciated.

1.  MusCan Annual General Meeting

The Canadian University Music Society will hold its Annual General Meeting on Friday, June 12th, from 1-4pm Eastern Daylight Time.

Given the cancellation of the conference due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, we will be proceeding virtually with this year’s AGM via Zoom.  To prevent any instances of “Zoom-bombing” and to make the meeting as secure as possible, we will be circulating instructions directly to current members about how to access the meeting closer to the meeting date rather than sending a broader message out via our usual channels.  If you have not yet renewed your membership for 2020, you may do so at

The MusCan by-laws state that:

Members, non-members, directors and the public accountant of the Corporation are entitled to be present at a meeting of members. However, only those members entitled to vote at the members' meeting according to the provisions of the Act, articles and bylaws are entitled to cast a vote at the meeting.

If you know of anyone who would like to attend but who is not a MusCan member, please have them contact us ahead of the meeting and we will send them an invitation.  In terms of procedure for the meeting itself, because only members may vote, we will need to verify membership status of all participants within the meeting before proceeding.  Our voting mechanism may also change depending on whether non-members are in attendance.

Given that we have to set up the online voting questions in advance, we would ask kindly that any members who wish to make motions or to nominate for any of the open board positions contact us as far as possible in advance of the meeting so that we may add these options to our voting software.

We require 21 voting members to attend in order to meet quorum for the AGM.  I would please ask that you strongly consider attending the meeting for this reason; if we cannot meet quorum, we cannot fulfill our legal obligation to hold an annual AGM.  To that end, I may contact some of you directly to ask whether you will be attending in order to ensure that we can meet the quorum (feel free to e-mail me directly if you know you will be attending and I will keep count).

2. Standing Committee of Institutional Members Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Standing Committee of Institutional Members will be held on Tuesday, June 9th, 11:00am–1:00 pm MDT (1-3pm Eastern Daylight Time).

The Chair of SCIM, William (Bill) Richards, will send information on how to join the meeting to each institution.  If you are the representative for your institution and you do not receive this message in advance of the meeting, please contact him at This email address is being protected from spambots. 3. Awards
We are pleased to announce that we will be able to award three prizes this year:  the SOCAN Foundation/MusCan Awards for Writings on Canadian Music, the SOCAN Foundation/MusCan Award of Excellence for the Advancement of Research in Canadian Music, and the MusCan Student Composition Prize.  We will announce the winners of the latter two prizes at the Annual General Meeting on June 12th.

Unfortunately, we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the George Proctor Prize this year.  The final evaluation for this prize is based not only on the written papers, but also on the live-presentation by the semi-finalists.  Without a conference we felt it would be too difficult to judge this component of the prize.  We look forward to resuming this award in 2021.

The deadline for the SOCAN Foundation/MusCan Awards for Writings on Canadian Music has been extended to May 15th, 2020.  If you know of a student who would like to apply, please ask them to send their submission to the prize chair, Glenn Colton (This email address is being protected from spambots. Thanks for your patience.  Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
