To celebrate its 20th anniversary, La Scena Musicale is searching for the Next Great Art Song with the launch of its new art song-writing competition. Composers will be invited to submit scores and recordings of their works to be voted on by the public along with a committee assembled by LSM comprised of specialists in the genre.

In the year leading up to the winner, LSM will feature the 10 Greatest Art Songs of all time, one or two per issue starting in September 2015, with the greatest art song revealed in fall 2016. The top 10 will be performed in Fall 2016 in a gala concert. Also on the program will be the art songs of our competition’s 10 finalists sung by some of Canada’s most internationally acclaimed artists.

The results of the top 10 will be compiled from the contributions of hundreds of specialists including musicologists, music writers, critics, singers, accompanists, vocal coaches and prominent musicians in a worldwide survey. We would like to invite you to participate in this survey and ask for your list of top 3 art songs. Along with your submission, we would appreciate a short text of at least 100 words about your #1 choice, the qualities or reasons behind it.

All texts will be published online on the LSM blog (http://blog.scena.org) and selected texts will be printed in our magazine. Our goal is to create awareness and renewed enthusiasm of the art song genre.

If you would kindly confirm your willingness to participate and send us your list and short text by July 31, 2015 we would be most appreciative. This will allow us sufficient time to tally the results and organize the subsequent editorial content. Send us your three choices on www.nextgreatartsong.com or email your submission to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
